Reflections on Light & Language

Hola amigos y parientes,” –hi friends and relatives!

Students finished up our recent focus on world winter celebrations by reflecting (in their portfolios) on what they learned while exploring and comparing several major holidays from around the world with their own family and/or community traditions.  I was pleased to see many students take time to ponder their observations in detail.

Students noticed that the symbol of light, during the darkest time of the year, was a common unifying element — celebrations of light were all over the language and culture world.  Students used their own exploratory notes and Venn diagram to see that each of these celebrations (while hundreds, or thousands of years old) still focused on family & community togetherness.

Currently, students are continuing to digest a gradually expanding range of comprehensible reading material in Spanish.  They are also recognizing more high-frequency class instructions in Spanish as we practice our daily routines.  Acting out our CI stories is great as each student participates at their level of readiness (and they have lots of laughs doing it).
