Photos from a Fantastic Week!

In Global Studies, the 4/5s set off answering questions from our “Need to Know” list. This week was, What was life like during the Revolutionary Period?

Ellie, Ezra, Raegan, Clara, and Matilda are engaging in an activity which created our shared understanding of elements of culture.

In Literacy the 4/5s have begun a focus on Historical Fiction. In our inquiry into the Revolutionary Period students will be looking at how conflict led to change. We will compare and contrast multiple perspectives and build off of our prior knowledge of Rights & Responsibilities. Using informational texts helps learners gather the facts, but reading historical fiction helps us connect with the people and their emotions.

To begin our exploration of this genre, we read aloud a picture book, not set in the Revolutionary Period, but another time of deep conflict in our history, The Civil War. This story helped the 4/5s see how much research goes into to making historical fiction realistic. Because the author is writing about a particular time in history, the information about the time period must be accurate and authentic. We also noted that good historical fiction is honest and doesn’t sugar coat the past.

The 4/5s took the school set of cross-country skis out for a spin in P.E.

Teachers and families worked together to erect the Gaga Pit made by students during CLIC week! (Be sure to check out the murals added to the fences, the welcome signs, and the sculpture garden too!)

4/5 Volunteers updated the school on the progress of our drive and introduced our special guest, Susan Stock- a Board Member and volunteer at the Shelburne Food Shelf.

Susan spoke with us about food insecurity, the needs of our local community, and answered all of our questions.

Vermont Day School is well on our way towards meeting our goal. A heartfelt thank you to those who have contributed so far! There are still 7 school days left! The 4/5 class will be bringing our donation to the Food Shelf on December 19th!

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!
